28th August 2018

It was the 46th Lady Captain's Day in Portsalon Golf Club on Saturday 25th August and what a great day it was for Lady Captain Karen McGlinchey.
After a slightly damp start the clouds cleared and the sun shone to make playing conditions perfect for the members and visitors.

In the evening a drinks reception was followed by a beautiful meal and the presentation of prizes.
Lady Vice Captain Mary Flynn introduced Mr Captain Mick McGlynn who congratulated Karen and thanked Karen for her work this season in promoting Portsalon Golf Club.
Mary Flynn recounted some very special days in Karen's year, including the successful fund raising event for the Donegal Hospice.

Finally the mic was passed to the eagerly awaiting Lady Captain Karen who was delighted to review some humorous highlights of her year before calling on competitions secretary Marie Gilligan to announce the winners (all results listed below).

The scoring was so tight the top three ladies finished on 40 points and were separated only by the break of tie.
Mary Barrett took the honors ahead of Deirdre Hensey 2nd and Roisin McCormack 3rd.
Disappointment for Deirdre and Roisin but sheer delight for Milford's Mary Barrett.
Lady Captain Karen's fabulous first prize was a three dimensional contemporary piece by Irish ceramics artist Ian Carty.
Mary Barrett said she was so delighted to receive such a beautiful prize and reflected on her winning round with playing partners Maureen Shanahan and Kathleen Friel.
Lady Captain's visitors from Letterkenny Golf Club also had a great day, Tracey Spence winner of the Visitors Prize thanked Karen for her kind invitation, great days golf and evening hospitality.
Entertainment by Gerry O'Sullivan followed the presentation, as always Gerry managed to rally the quiet and shy onto the dance floor including the Maire O'Donnell team members who had planned an early night in preparation for their second leg semi final match against Donegal GC Murvagh at 2.30pm the following day.
Unfortunately Portsalon struggled in the rain and wind to secure the three matches they needed and were deeply disappointed their 2018 Maire O'Donnell campaign ended. Team Captain Karen McGlinchey wished Donegal GC good luck in the final against Letterkenny.

The Portsalon Ladies Team took part in the annual 'Donegal Shield' competition on Saturday in Dunfanaghy.
As predicted Dunfanaghy the favourites won the Shield in fine style, they had an outstanding total of 121 points propped up my the magnificent score of Grace McFadden (33) who had 46 points.
Bundoran GC beat Letterkenny into second place on the break of tie, both teams finishing with 114 points

The most notable performance of the day came from Ann Cannon of Letterkenny who had 44 points playing off 11.

Portsalon produced a respectable 105 points with a inspiring performance from Claire Ferry(17) who had 37 points.
It was a glorious day in Dunfanaghy, blue skies and warmer light winds provided ideal conditions which was welcomed and enjoyed by all the visiting teams. A total of 14 clubs were represented  126 golfers played. CSS 37.

The chat afterwards was naturally about the beautiful weather and the fabulous scores by Grace and Ann but there was also a great deal of discussion about 'only 3 scores counting', the consensus was that that in future at least 5 players scores should count or potentially all 9 including the Captains, this will ultimately be a decision for the Donegal Shield Committee.

After the Shield was presented to Dunfanaghy the draw for the Maire O' Donnell 2018 match play competition took place.
Portsalon will face old rivals North West GC in the first round in June. Portsalon will be hoping for similar success to last year when they reached the September final but unfortunately narrowly lost to Ballybofey. Can they go all the way in 2018?

In other club news Deirdre O'Toole (12) won the Sunday Members Competition with a great score of 38 points.
CSS 74.
